Who We Are
Kansas City United Church of Christ is an Open and Affirming, Peace with Justice congregation located in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. We are a unique family of God’s people.
Our worship is traditional, but our thinking is not! We value diversity of belief and perspective. Our faith community contains people who identify as Christian, those who seek spiritual truth but resist traditional religious labels, agnostics who are drawn to the teachings of Jesus, and more. We believe church is about community and dialogue rather than conformity. We believe in loving God with our hearts and also our minds. We believe God is still speaking to each of us and each person has the freedom to experience God in their own way.
We are… long time believers, new seekers of faith, doubters whose faith has been worn, and free thinkers exploring multiple spiritualities. We are... singles and couples; marrieds with grown children and families with young children. We are... multi-generational from 1 year to 94 years, but mostly ages 30 to 70. We are... straight, gay, lesbian, trans, and non-binary. We are... people who choose to be together as an inclusive Christian community to nurture our souls, stretch our minds and work for justice and peace.
All people are welcome here, including LGBTQIA+ people.
KCUCC is an Open and Affirming (ONA) congregation. We open our doors to everyone whatever their gender, economic class, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnicity or difference in ability. Because of Christianity’s historic and ongoing oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people (LGBTQIA+), we decided over 20 years ago to publicly declare our support for LGBTQIA+ rights. We are open to people of all sexual orientations, gender expressions and gender identities and we affirm them as made by God. Today our church is made up of roughly half heterosexual/cisgender people and half LGBTQIA+ people.
People who care about peace and justice are welcome here.
KCUCC is a Peace With Justice congregation, because we believe peace and justice are at the heart of Jesus’ teachings. We promote interdependence and community through economic, political and social justice. We seek to love life in all its diversity. We work for a sustainable earth and try to answer resentment and anger with the equitable distribution of the earth’s resources.
People with all abilities are welcome here.
Our sanctuary was built in 1923 and, like most older buildings, it wasn’t originally designed to accommodate people with disabilities. We continue to work to make our building as accessible to everyone as possible, including creating a wheelchair accessible entrance, adding central air conditioning and providing hearing assistance and large print bulletins during our services.

Children are welcome here.
KCUCC values children. Children take part in worship during the Children’s Time at the front of the sanctuary with one of the ministers. On most Sundays, children can choose to attend Sunday School during the rest of worship service, or they may stay with their families. Nursery care is available every Sunday for infants through preschool-aged children.
